Perth Region NRM submitted a creative proposal and will bring the 5th WA State Coastal Conference and WA Coastal Awards for Excellence Ceremony to Perth for the first time in 2009.
The conference is expected to bring more than 250 delegates to Perth and bring together community, government and industry organisationsto share their perspectives and discuss priorities.
The WAPC would like to thank those people who applied for hosting the 5th WA State Coastal Conference.
A selection panel consisting of members from the Coastal Planning and Coordination Council, Department for Planning and Infrastructure, Western Australian Local Government Association and the immediate past host (the Shire of Denmark), evaluated the expressions of interest. Proposals were evaluated against criteria including project management, financial estimates, draft program, capacity to engage target groups and program creativity.
The conference will be held at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle on 7 - 9 October 2009.
The conference is an important opportunity to address changing coastal planning and management issues in the light of the crucial sustainability and environmental challenges we face today and in the future. The conference will:
• provide a forum to communicate important and urgent coastal issues from around the state;
• provide a forum for the discussion of new advances in technology, ideas and research;
• bring together all key stakeholders from government, industry and community to promote new partnerships and enhance cooperation in the field; and
• share and learn from one another’s experiences in coastal planning and management.
The WA Coastal Conference has been staged on four occasions since 2001 with great success and has been hosted by:
• 2007 - Shire of Denmark
• 2005 - joint partnership between the Shire of Busselton, City of Mandurah, City of Bunbury and the South West and Peel Coastal Management Group (CoastSWap)
• 2003 - City of Geraldton
• 2001 - South Coast Management Group
The conference also incorporates the WA Coastal Awards for Excellence ceremony. The awards provide an important opportunity to recognise local communities, coastal managers and individuals for their commitment and hard work to the protection and management of WA’s special coastal and marine environment. Further information on award categories and how to apply will become available in 2009.
