The Department of Planning, City of Geraldton-Greenough and the Shire of Irwin have initiated a coastal planning project in the Dongara to Cape Burney coastal area.
This project will provide strategic planning guidance for future sustainable development, subdivision and land use along the Dongara to Cape Burney coastal strip underpinned by sound environmental principles. It will result in the development of a strategic coastal management plan that will be used by planners, developers and the community.
A steering committee has been set up with representatives from local government, Northern Agricultural Catchment Council, Department of Environment and Conservation, Tourism WA, Department of Planning, Department for Agriculture and Food, Yamatji Land and Sea Council, and the community.
The project has a 12 month timeline with key phases including:
- collection of background information;
- community consultation;
- development of the strategy;
- advertising the draft strategy and public comment; and
- final endorsement and release of the strategy.
The community will have a number of opportunities to be involved, such as the initial consultation phase and providing comment on the draft strategy.

Community consultation updates
Community consultation sessions were held in Dongara and Geraldton in October, including presentations by the local governments, interactive workshops and information stations. Thank you very much to all who attended and provided their valuable input! We received lots of great information on the community's values, issues and aspirations for the coast. If you didn't get a chance to attend you can still let us know what you think about the coast.
