A proposed urban design framework to guide the development of the Maylands activity centre is being released for public comment.
Department for Planning and Infrastructure Director General Eric Lumsden said that the framework will encourage the creation of a vibrant town centre with a mix of retail, office, entertainment and residential uses, while protecting and enhancing a distinct sense of diversity, character and history in Maylands.
"The framework also aims to provide certainty to the community and developers that future growth in the Maylands activity centre will be sustainable and enhance its unique character.
“Future development would reflect Network City principles which would see a mixed use and pedestrian friendly design centred around a major public transport node.
City of Bayswater Mayor Lou Magro says the proposed design framework will guide the future development of Maylands and help deliver the City’s vision for Maylands to rival Subiaco and East Perth for its vibrant and unique lifestyle.
“The framework is about creating liveable communities with access to great local facilities and services such as shops, cafes and restaurants.
“It will increase housing choices and deliver city living in a high quality urban environment.
“Maylands has a special character and the urban design framework will help protect and build on that character.”
There are seven precincts proposed in the framework, each representing similar character and land use. Specific development standards that address building height, setbacks, pedestrian movement, high quality design, articulation of built form, and character and heritage have been developed for each of the precincts.
“It is important that we get feedback on the proposed framework and I would like to see the community taking the opportunity to be involved in shaping the future development of Maylands,” Mayor Magro said.
