 The quest to deliver the best planning and development outcomes for communities throughout Western Australia requires contribution from a wide range of disciplines including urban planning, architecture, environmentalism, engineering, law, cartography, economics, finance, human resources, business, administration, IT, communications and design among others.

The Department of Planning employs more than 430 people from diverse backgrounds who provide professional and technical expertise and various corporate services to the Western Australian Planning Commission and the Minister for Planning.

Professional learning and development

The Department provides quality learning opportunities to develop and refine the professional and personal skills of its employees. As well as job-specific training and development, employees can participate in a range of corporate programs.

The Leadership Development Program for senior managers comprises personal and professional developmental activities designed to expand leadership capability through a collaborative and consistent approach. The program includes twice yearly forums; skills and personal development workshops; and access to sector-wide programs and scholarship opportunities.

For middle managers, the Frontline Management Program provides a nationally recognised and accredited training framework to develop and enhance managerial competencies through focus on practical application and demonstration of competencies within the workplace.

Coaching skills workshops equip managers with the skills to foster positive relationships with their team members and empower them to explore options, make decisions and develop skills and competencies among their team.

The Mentoring Program is designed to pair junior officers with senior employees who can provide relevant professional advice and support over the long-term.

The Scholarship Program provides employees wanting to pursue further education with the opportunity to apply for generous subsidies of up to 75 per cent of course fees.

Performance development reviews

Annual performance development reviews are undertaken to give employees the opportunity to discuss their work performance and career plans with their line manager. The review process encourages open discussion regarding the employee’s achievements and behaviour in line with the Department corporate values, and is an opportunity to identify and negotiate professional learning and development needs.
