The Western Australian Planning Commission has released its 2025-2029 Strategic Plan, with a strong focus on creating a culture of impactful leadership and collaboration across the WA planning system.

With statewide responsibility for integrated urban and regional planning, the Commission plays a vital role in shaping policy and planning systems that serve the long-term interests of Western Australian communities.

The new plan outlines five strategic priorities to support sustainable growth and economic diversification:

  • Contemporary and coordinated planning: Continuous improvement, responsive to stakeholder and community needs.
  • Sustainable communities and environments: Enabling community resilience, and responding to climate change
  • Residential land and housing supply: Accelerate planning to support housing diversity, affordability and delivery.
  • Infrastructure – enabled delivery: Leading better alignment of development and infrastructure
  • Economic growth and diversification: Supporting state-wide economic development and expansion.

Work is already underway.

The Commission is advancing planning across key priority housing corridors, advising the Minister for Planning on updates to the Residential Design Codes to unlock well-designed infill, and collaborating with the Environmental Protection Authority to streamline district-level environmental advice. The development of a new Renewable Energy Planning Code is also progressing.

The Commission is committed to continued engagement with stakeholders as it delivers on this ambitious new plan, which will strengthen the foundations for a more liveable, sustainable and economically vibrant Western Australia.
